What I Believe
Public education is a pillar of our democratic society, providing children of every background and socioeconomic status an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills they need to build a better life and participate as informed citizens. Strong public schools benefit all of us, whether we have children or not, and even if we choose other options for our children's education.
I am a product of public schools. I grew up in a state known for being near the bottom in public school rankings, yet my memories are filled with teachers, parents, and volunteers that went above and beyond and cared deeply about their students. At the same time, residents of our district voted down levies year after year. We found a way to do more with less, but I think our children deserve more than that - they are a worthy investment of our time and money.
In Cuyahoga Falls we have been fortunate with community support in the form of volunteerism, passed levies, donations, and partnerships with businesses and non-profits. I want to work as a board member to ensure:
- Every student has the tools they need to be successful, regardless of address, income, family status, disability, or any other factor.
- Our residents choose Cuyahoga Falls CSD, their local public school district, over other public and private options.
- Our district spends every dollar wisely and instills confidence in our residents, so that if we ask for more support in the form of tax dollars, you trust that your investment is improving our schools, and as a result, our community.
Why Am I Running?
I have been actively involved in the school district as a parent, volunteer, and PTO member. I have been closely following the discussions surrounding closure of an elementary school over the past several months. After attending many board meetings and getting a crash course in school funding, budgets, building requirements, and more, I want to take an active role in the decisions that will shape our school system.
I have no illusions that this work is easy or simple, but I am ready to delve into the tasks of the school board, large and small, and put the work in to make the best decisions possible for our students, families, and staff throughout the district.
I am especially interested in leading our district to undertake a thoughtful, considered approach to future planning for our elementary school buildings, including meaningful community input on a schedule that is not rushed or reactionary.
What Makes Me a Good Candidate?
- Involved parent and volunteer with a strong stake in the quality of our school system
- Commitment to open communication, transparency and clear decisions based on unbiased information
- Head start on the current business of the school board from in-person attendance at board meetings
- Small business owner with experience in contracts, budgeting, personnel and project management
- Licensed civil engineer and historic preservation consultant with 20 years of experience working for and advising government agencies in research, decision-making, public engagement, and finding solutions to complex issues
